On February 26th with the participation of men and women from the local community of Santo Domingo, UN Women promoted HeForShe Campaign. On behalf of UN Women, Piet Wostyn encouraged men to commit to gender equality and the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women. He emphasized that the campaign aims to make visible those men around the world who are committed to gender equality and that believe in women´s empowerment. The event was hosted by the President of the Parliamentary Group of Women´s Rights, Diego Vintimilla, and the Parliamentary Mary Verduga as representative of the legislative function of the State.
Since the official launch of the HeForShe campaign in September 2014, around 257.000 men have committed to gender equality and specifically, in Ecuador more than 4.000 men have supported the campaign, as they showed their support during this event, where 242 men expressed their commitment to promote gender equality.
It is important to mention that according to the National Women´s Mechanism of Ecuador, 59.5% of women in Santo Domingo have suffered some kind of violence. In this sense, Piet Wostyn invited all men and boys to raise their voice and to take action in promoting gender equality and to realize that this is not only a women´s concern, it involves everyone as part of the society to take actions against all forms of violence against women and girls.
